CMJ (College Music Journal) College airplay chart is a great place for new artist and labels to begin getting exposed.
In order to review the charts you can subscribe directly through the CMJ website or pick-up a copy on most college campus and or newsstands. A great potion of their chart can only be found directly in their magazine only, so it's good to subscribe. How does it work, CMJ doing a weekly charting of playlist of individual stations around the USA and Canada. These lists are compiled from College and NPR Station that actually show new artist climbing the charts. This is also a medium the major label uses to break out new artist. Have you ever seen a now a current major artist like Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Christine on your campus before you heard of them? Well this is how they got started. This list use to be a free a one point, but currently you must pay to access them because once again everyone wants a spot on the charts. CMJ has about the 1,000 Station + that are eligible to be include on their TOP 200 Charts. It only about 50% of eligible stations submits that you would need to know about. How does the programming works? Well all stations are made up of segments, most of the CMJ community are student in Broadcasting class or offsite Disc Jockeys. Each Segment or Shows provides its playlist to the music director for its station and then the music director compiles a “Top 30 or 40” Artist(s) that all the DJ's are playing and sent them CMJ. CMJ then Averages all the Top charts and then make up the Top 200 Charts for that week.
